Ten Life Lessons Learned On The Golf Course

Golf, like many other sports, offers life lessons to those who are willing to learn. Regardless of if you’re already a golfer or thinking about starting– there are many things that you can learn from the game.

After asking a handful of golfers what they have learned while spending time out on the course, it became evident that people were experiencing the same things. Here are 10 lessons that golfers of varied ages, gender, and experience all learned while out on the course.

1. Communication and Cooperation

Golf is a great sport that can help you in building communication skills that will help you get along and cooperate with others. If you’re out on the course, oftentimes you don’t always have a four-some and you’re with random people. An 18-hole course takes a while to get through, so communication is a great tool to have.

When golfing, even if you’re in a competition it’s important to be able to cooperate with others. You can find common ground with competitors, make friends with people you’ve just met, and you will find that you’ll be able to interact with others on a
whim. Golf helps build your skills in communication and cooperation, which is a valuable skill to bring with you when you leave the course.

2. You can’t always Control the Uncontrollable

Golf is a sport where you definitely can’t expect to control every aspect of your game. Sometimes you’ll hit a shot and feel like it’s perfect… only to see that the result was horrible. If you try to control the uncontrollable, the game quickly becomes frustrating and you stop having fun.

When on the course, if you stop trying to control the uncontrollable you’ll be able to enjoy yourself and accept that sometimes you’re just unlucky. And that’s okay. There are things you can control, such as your swing, your mentality, decision making, etc… but if your shot happens to hit a sprinkler head that sends it flying 30 yards over the green, you definitely can’t control that.

3. You’ll Have Lucky Days and Unlucky Days

Golf is a game where you’ll have more bad shots than good ones. Even in a great outing, you’ll probably have quite a few bad shots. Sometimes you’ll have quite a few lucky shots, and other times you’ll have some unlucky ones. In some outings you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world, and sometimes you just gotta roll with the punches.

Learning to work through the reality that you’ll have to have unlucky days intermixed with your lucky ones is a great lesson that golf teaches us. Some days everything goes well and things all come together, and on other days nothing seems to go well at all. Golf teaches us how to deal with the mentality we need to get through the unlucky times and the persistence we need to get the most out of every day we have.

4. Persistence and Resilience

To be honest, golf is not an easy sport. Wherever you’re at in your development, things will not always go your way. If you stick with it, you’ll learn the important lessons of having resilience and being persistent with your goals.

Resilience comes with having toughness during adversity and continuing forward when things don’t go well. If you have a few bad shots in a row, it takes resilience and persistence to make a good one to break the pattern. Being persistent in practice will not only make you a better golfer, but will help you in every walk of life. It’s a great lesson to learn that will help you reach goals and grow in whatever you apply it towards.

5. Goal Setting leads to Growth

Setting goals and achieving goals is a base that people use to strive for success… and golf teaches us how to do this. Golf teaches us how to learn to set achievable goals that allow us to grow. Goal setting is an important skill– but setting achievable goals for yourself is even more important.

Growth is not always an upward slope, and sometimes you’ll fall short of your goals. Golf helps us recognize the times where new goals need to be set to get us back on track and going in the right direction. Whether it’s setting new goals to work on our
swing, our mentality while approaching the tee, etc., goals help in our growth.

6. Patience is Key

Golf teaches us patience as it is a game where you have to go shot by shot– you can’t get ahead of yourself and you have to stay in the moment. That being said, having patience is important in golf. You can’t force a great shot, a birdie, or a lower score. You can’t make a birdie with your tee shot, but you can make a double bogey or worse if you force it.

Being patient with yourself and your shots, making sure each time you approach the ball that you’re in the moment and not two shots ahead will only make you better. This is a great approach to take with you in life– be patient, in the moment, and approach each task like it’s the most important task you’ve ever done. That’s what golf can teach you.

7. Humility is Valuable

Humility is another valuable lesson that many golfers can learn while out on the course. Being humble is a powerful attribute that comes from being tested by other opponents out on the course, respecting other golfers, and recognizing other talent on
the course.

Having humility allows you to play through the good and bad while still being approachable and gives you a space to find mentors who will help improve your game. This is a great lesson that you can take with you into multiple aspects of your life, whether it’s at work, at home, or in other hobbies– humility is a great attribute to have.

8. Have Integrity in Everything You Do

Another lesson that golfers tend to learn while out on the course is what it means to have integrity. In golf, there isn’t someone there to watch your every shot. Even in tournament play, the only people there to see your every shot will be your playing
partners.

You’ll discover that there are many ways you can cheat to get better scores– but in the end, cheating the rules will only cheat yourself. Having integrity every time you step out on the course and playing by the rules will only benefit you, as integrity is a valuable lesson you can take with you off the course!

9. Etiquette and Respect

The etiquette and rules for golf is very important to know and respect for any golfer. Golf etiquette is something that people should be aware of on the course and maintain. For example, not stepping into someone else’s line, being quiet when someone is hitting, not driving the golf cart on the tee boxes and greens, fixing your ball marks, moving at the pace of the course, etc.

Following the etiquette shows your respect for the game, the course, and the others who are golfing. By showing respect, it makes it easier to communicate and work with others out on the course and gives you a great experience.

10. Have Grace for others Around You

Golf is a sport where having grace for others out on the course with you makes your experience a great one. Oftentimes you’ll meet people that come from all walks of life out on the course. If they don’t adhere to the same etiquette and rules as you,
sometimes it takes some grace to recognize the situation and cooperate with them.

Out on the course, you’ll have groups in front of you and behind you. If the group in front of you is going slower, making you wait before each hole– sometimes you need to have grace if they’re not matching your pace. There may be new golfers, older golfers who need more time, etc. Having grace for their situation is important, and will start to blend into your life off the course.

Five Steps to Get Started Golfing as a Beginner

Are you interested in learning how to golf? Great! Now that you want to learn, the next
question usually is… how do you start?

The hardest part of golf is the beginning, when you are working to try to figure out how to
hold the club, develop a good golf swing, as well as learning the rules and etiquette for the
sport. When looking at it all, it’s often overwhelming for beginners and seems exhausting to try
to figure out.

At River Oaks Golf Course, we welcome anyone who is new to golf and interested in
starting. We’ve put together 5 big picture steps to help you along the way to help break down
the process of learning golf from getting your first clubs to getting out on the course.

Step 1: Borrow clubs or purchase a beginner golf set

The first step to starting to golf? Getting some clubs.

There are a few routes you can take with this step. Golf clubs can be expensive, so you can either borrow clubs from a friend or family member to start, you can find a beginner golf set, or you can use someone’s old clubs that they may have laying around.

Before going out to purchase a set of clubs, it’s a good idea to make sure that you’re ready to make the commitment to golfing. For beginners, you will really only need a few clubs to start with. You’ll want to have a driver, a wood or hybrid, a 7-iron, a 8-iron, a 9-iron, and a putter. Whether you purchase a beginners set, have hand-me-down clubs, or found a few clubs on
Facebook Marketplace, you should be able to work with what you have.

Another good thing to keep in mind is when you’re starting out even if you don’t have a complete set of clubs, if you go to a teaching or instruction clinic the instructor will oftentimes have extra clubs to use if you need them.

Step 2: Learn the basics of golf

Learning the basics of golf, from the mechanics of your swing to the rules and etiquette on the course is tough, but it’s also a lot of fun.

As a beginner, you will want to start out by learning how to grip and swing your clubs. If you have a friend or family member who is willing to walk you through it, that’s always a good way to begin. An easy way to do this is just working on your swing in your backyard or going to the driving range at River Oaks.

One of the best ways to learn how to golf is to start out with lessons. Lessons from a golf pro will give you the opportunity to learn the fundamentals and the proper mechanics of a golf swing, giving you a great base to build off of. Starting out with bad habits means you’ll have to spend time trying to break them in the future, so it’s always recommended to develop good ones
from the get go.

Lessons at River Oaks Golf Course are with our resident golf pro, Barrett Boe. He works with individuals of all levels, and focuses on teaching the basics of the golf swing. If you’re wondering why you should take lessons at River Oaks, we have a great post to look at here.

To sign up for lessons with Boe, click here to be taken to the page!

When starting out, you will also want to familiarize yourself with the terminology, rules, and etiquette that comes with the sport. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the different types of clubs you’ll find in your bag, the types of holes that you’ll come across on the course, areas you’ll find out on the course, and how score is kept in the sport.

A lot of times these things come from spending time on the course, but it’s always a good idea to learn some of these things ahead of time.

Step 3: Consistent practice and persistence

As a beginner, it’s important to not just attend one lesson or clinic and be on your way. Learning to golf is a process, and it takes a few lessons to be able to develop the solid base you’ll need to continue to grow with good habits. River Oaks has many opportunities for you to practice your golf game before you even touch the course.

After a lesson, it’s a great time to practice your swing and things you’ve learned at the driving range. River Oaks Golf Course has a Toptracer Driving Range that gives you real time information about your shot. It connects to an app on your phone and allows you to practice by playing games while on the range that will help you improve. Are you looking for more information about what our Toptracer Driving Range does for you? Check out our post about it here!

River Oaks also has a practice green to work on your putting skills, just to the left of the club house. While it’s a lot of fun to hit a few balls at the driving range, it becomes more of a mental game when you get closer to the hole. By practicing your putting skills, you’ll be able to develop more confidence in yourself which will transition with you onto the course.

Once you feel confident in your swing, that’s when it’s time to take your game to the course.

Step 4: Find a group or person to golf with

Before signing up for a tee time on the River Oaks website, you’ll need to find a partner
or group to golf with. Golf is the type of sport that anyone can play together regardless of their
skill level. If you have some friends or family who golf, it’s a great idea to start out on the course
with them!

Most golfers are willing to join in on a round of golf if you ask, or are willing to make
plans to go out in the future. If you attend a golf clinic, it’s always a good idea to ask the others
in your group if they want to join you, as you’ll all be at a similar level and learn together.

River Oaks Golf Course allows you to set up tee times on our website. When booking a
tee time, you can schedule 2 to 4 golfers at the times available. Check out our tee times here to
get yourself scheduled to play the course!

Step 5: Start golfing on the course

Are you ready to get out on the golf course? Great!

When you start golfing on the course, sometimes golfing 18 holes can be overwhelming for a beginner. River Oaks Golf Course gives you the option to only do 9 holes instead of the 18. Just make sure when you register your tee time on our website that you select the 9-hole option instead of 18.

When starting the course, make sure to show up on time for your tee time, and then start by hitting off the tee! Another thing to do is to make sure that you’re keeping pace with the course. There will be groups teeing off after you, so you and your partners will want to make sure you’re maintaining a good pace throughout the course.

For beginners, one of the most important things to keep in mind is that your score doesn’t matter– you’re golfing to improve yourself and get better and to learn more about what golf is all about. Keep your score to have a reference, but don’t worry about how you do. We all start somewhere, the majority of people you’ll be playing with will be happy to help you along.

Don’t worry too much, and take it one step at a time. If you end up needing any guidance along the way, reach out to any of the staff at River Oaks. We’ll be happy to help!

Time to Book your Tee Times

Are you ready to get started golfing on the course? Great! To get started, you will need to book a tee time. A tee time is a reservation at a golf course that allows you to begin your round of golf at a specific time. So, if you have a tee time scheduled for 8:35 am, you or someone in your group will be hitting their first shot then (so, essentially the time is when you tee off).

At River Oaks, tee times are required so people can use the course from sun-up to sun-down, and give everyone a great experience. You book an 18-hole reservation or a 9-hole reservation. But, to golf a 9-hole, the reservation will need to be after 12:00 pm or on a holiday.

We also ask that if anything changes with your reservation, or if you are unable to make your tee time due to unforeseen events, you call our Golf Shop or update your tee time on the website. By doing this we can cut down on no-shows so more people can enjoy the course.

Use this link here to direct you right to where to book your tee time! We are excited to see you out there!
